Saturated Market Scaring You? 5 Reasons Why Etsy is Still the Best Place to Sell Handmade Jewelry

If I have heard it once, I have heard it a thousand times: “The market for handmade jewelry on Etsy is too saturated.” I’m here to tell you that yes, the market is saturated, BUT (and that is a big but) you still can successfully sell your handmade jewelry on Etsy! Here’s my list of 5 reasons why Etsy is a great place for handmade jewelry makers to sell:

1. Anonymity: You don’t have to sell to family & friends!

If you hate that multi level marketing feeling of selling to your family or friends Etsy is for you! It’s also great if like me, you struggle to put your items “out there” for your closest confidants to see. One beautiful thing about Etsy is that you can let go of all those reservations and no one needs to know you have an Etsy shop (unless you want to tell them of course). You won’t be held back by self consciousness and you will have a playground where you can test out different items and see what a vast market wants. Speaking of vast markets….

2. Etsy is an authority in the handmade market and has a loyal built in following.

Gone are the days of worrying about upcoming craft shows and if you will make enough to cover your booth fees. Etsy has been around for over 10 years and they have evolved into the most well known platform for finding unique, handmade goods. They have created such a buzz that companies like Amazon have more recently thrown their hat in the handmade ring by releasing their own Handmade by Amazon platform. When you get such a large and well known company like Amazon paying attention, you know you’ve made ripples in the market. And even with Amazon attempting to take a cut of the same market, Etsy holds it’s own and excels because Etsy’s reputation and advertising has only grown their audience. That brings me to point #3.

  3. You don’t have to worry about setting up a website, advertising, and promoting your product on every social media platform (unless you want to). Etsy brings millions of buyers to their platform monthly and about half are repeat buyers! Etsy truly is a great platform for a “side hustle” with a fast start up time and low maintenance. Many handmade sellers start on Etsy, develop a presence there, and then move on to start their own websites in addition to their etsy shops. It is a great starting point for officially launching your handmade business and scaling it as you go.
  4. You will save money starting a shop on Etsy compared to starting your own website. Hosting fees and buying a theme or paying a developer to set up your website isn’t free and in fact, the upfront cost is much more than Etsy.
