Littles love bath time and this is the perfect towel for when they are ready to get out of the tub and get dried off quickly. If you have 10 minutes and basic sewing skills, you can make this cute hooded towel today! These also make a great gift, so if you are looking for a creative handmade gift that is useful, this is it!
Overview
This hooded towel fits ages 3 and up great! There are some adjustments you can make to change the size if needed. I go over them at the end of this article, but for now here is the basic tutorial:
The anatomy of the towel is simple. It’s two parts- A bath towel and a hand towel.
The trickiest part of designing this bath towel was finding a way to fold the hand towel to form a hood. It took a few different tries before I found a super simple way to get the look I was going for.
Here’s what you will need for this project:
- 1 Bath Towel
- 1 Hand Towel
- Thread
- Scissors
- Pins or Clips
- Washable Marker
- Sewing Machine
Step 1: Hood
Fold your hand towel in half, bringing the short ends together. NOTE: The side of the towel you see with be on the INSIDE of the hood. Most towels look the same on both sides, but if you happen to have on that doesn’t , this is a good thing to keep in mind.
Next, you will make what I’m going to call an “M” fold. To do this, put your thumb inside the fold on either side of the towel, pinch, and then slowly pull straight down about 2″ going between the top and bottom layers of the towel. The fold should now look like an “M” when viewed from the side. Use sewing clips or pins to secure fold.
Sew a 1/4″ to 1/2″ seam up one side. Make sure to go slow in the fold area and remove pins before sewing over them.
Turn right side out.
Step 2: Attach Hood to Towel
You’re on the homestretch of this project! You’ve mastered the tricky fold and are now ready to finish your towel in record time. Here’s what to do next:
Mark the centers of your bath towel and the bottom edge of the hood. To do this, for them each in half as shown and mark with a washable marker.
Unfold both towels.
Place bottom edge of hood on top of towel and line up the center marks. The hood should overlap the towel by about 1/2″. Pin.
Sew along dashed line as shown, back stitching at the begging and end. Again, remember to go slow and remove your pins before sewing over them.
Finished!
Clip off the loose threads and you are ready to gift it or keep it for your little one!
